My Gear – Canon L Zooms

You might remember a couple months ago I posted about my Canon L prime lenses. This is the second post talking about the tools I typically use at a wedding and many of my film projects. You might remember how much I loved my Canon L primes lenses from my previous post, well here are my Canon L zoom lenses pictured below.

Shown from left to right are the 17-40mm 4.0L, 24-70mm 2.8L, and the 70-200mm 2.8L IS.

Zoom lenses offer some advantages over prime lenses. Two advantages are they are lighter, and offer more flexibility. The 3 lenses I have listed above, are essentially all you need to shoot weddings, giving you a range of 17mm (wide) to 200mm (telephoto). Any time anyone asks about what lens to buy next I always ask if they have this range covered with zoom lenses before buying primes. Zooms make it easier to move quickly and get shots by “zooming-in” when you don’t have the time or ability to get closer to get the shot. One of the disadvantages is that they are not as good for low light, compared to prime lenses, with their smaller apertures.

Keep reading below for a few notes about each lens and a few favorite images I took with it.

Canon EF 17-40mm 4.0LThis is actually one of my least used lenses in my bag. I probably would use a wide angle zoom more if I had the Canon 16-35mm 2.8L which would give me another stop of light. When I do use my 17-40mm I tend to use it for group shots. Here is one of my favorites.

Canon EF 24-70mm 2.8LI have been using this lenses less and less recently. Maybe because I prefer my prime lenses, and also I let my assistant use it when I don’t need it on a wedding day. Actually many of my friends in the industry have sold this lens and no longer have it in their gear bag on a wedding day. I like to keep it as back-up for my primes, just in case. This lens comes in handy for group shots since group sizes tend to change constantly, so it is much quicker to zoom and reframe than move back and forth constantly.  Another nice feature is it’s macro capability, which is great when you are pressed for time and don’t need to use a true macro lens.

Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8L ISOut of all my L zoom lenses, this is the one I use most. This lens is my workhorse during the ceremony. I also use it at times during the reception, group shots, and shots of the bride and groom together. The IS (Image Stabilization) feature is really helpful during indoor ceremonies or low light reception halls. The zoom range is great for capturing nearly everything during the ceremony.

Rancho Capistrano Wedding Photography – Adam & Victoria – 09/04/2010

Last Saturday I drove down to San Juan Capistrano to shoot Adam & Victoria’s wedding at the beautiful Rancho Capistrano.  You might remember Adam and Victoria from my blog post about their engagement session a few months back.

Adam and Victoria are such a fun couple, I am so glad they chose me to be there to capture their wedding day.  From the moment we first met, last November, we hit it off.  I told them during our meeting that their wedding day would be here before they knew it.  Now it is nearly a week since their wedding and before you know it they will be celebrating their 1 year anniversary.  I hope their first year is a blast and that each year after  it only gets better.

The amazing vendors from the day
Coordination: Chelsea Boyd
Venue: Rancho Capistrano
Cake: Filigree Cakes
Flowers: Megan’s Garden
My amazing 2nd photographer: Jeremy Yates
My amazing assistant:  Jason Sorge

There we so many great images from Adam & Victoria’s wedding.  Here are just few of my favorites.

The day started with Victoria getting ready with her girls at the Holiday Inn in Lake Forest, CA.

Adam and Victoria are big UCLA football fans, so it was no surprise Victoria was watching the UCLA-Kansas State game while she was getting ready. Kansas State just intercepted the football with seconds left in the first half when a grabbed this shot. Victoria checked throughout the day for an updated score.

Once the hair and make-up was finished we all headed down to Rancho Capistrano to finish getting ready.

I grabbed this right when Jason, Jeremy and I all stepped in at the same time to get closer at the end of the session. Adam & Victoria both burst out laughing feeling like we were paparazzi. Such a fun moment and I am thankful for Adam & Victoria’s sense of humor.

[…] for their engagement session. I have known this lovely couple for a while, as they were guests at Adam & Victoria’s wedding! Once they decided they were ready to start planning their wedding they reached out to me […]

Catching up – my first post in over a month

Life has been pretty crazy since my last post. For the past month when I haven’t been busy meeting with brides, shooting, editing, or designing albums I have been traveling, doing pick-up shots for “Absentia” and “American Marriage“, being a full time dad while Victoria traveled for work, catching a few Phillies games during their recent west coast road trip, and taking Gideon to Disneyland. You can see why I haven’t posted for a while.

Don’t worry, you won’t have to wait as long for my next post! I am shooting a wedding tomorrow and should have it blogged by the end of next week. While you wait, here are a few videos I shot of Gideon at Disneyland earlier this week on two of his favorite rides. I can’t believe he is already 22 months!
